Yes canvassers have holy water thrown at them

As someone who has canvassed at weekends in Cork, I can confirm that “yes” campaigners have received lots of abuse — verbal and otherwise.

I’ve had holy water thrown at me. Some have had worse hurled in their direction — although it’s nothing compared to the homophobic abuse gay people have experienced over the years.

We didn’t convene any press conferences about it: we just kept going. By contrast, the ‘no’ campaign is playing up every incident.

Victimhood seems to be the last refuge of those opposing equal recognition for same gender couples. I hope the Irish people see this for what it is — just one more ploy.
