Children need guardians

I agree with Elle Maher (Irish Examiner Letters, March 18) that children are the most vulnerable of citizens and that their needs should always come first. However, her belief that adoption by same-gender couples conflicts with the needs of the child does not accord with reality.

Children need guardians

The majority of same-gender couples will be seeking to adopt because one of the biological parents is no longer around and the other is in a new, gay relationship.

It’s in the interests of the child to have two legal guardians. Just because some people disapprove of the relationship is no reason to leave the child in a legally vulnerable position. Protection of children must come before the prejudice of others.
