But it is futile and late, since nobody is paying a blind bit of notice. The hypocrisy of the political and media classes was in full flight during the boom. The message, then, was that all in the garden was rosy and anyone who said otherwise would be labelled a whinger, or worse.

The country went bankrupt and needed an €80bn-plus bail-out.
