Dr Geraldine Mooney-Simmie is not right when she says the bankrupting of this country was of ‘Europe’s making’ and that Trichet’s letter is ‘an issue of human and moral rights’ (Letters, November 14).

Bankrupting of Ireland was of our own doing

The reason Ireland went bankrupt was down to the decisions made by the people in Ireland. They were the powerful people in charge of government and financial institutions during the decade or more of the boom.

Countries whose policy-makers and financial decision makers made good choices will always be able to survive external economic crises.
