A universal pension could end inequality

Taxpayers are picking up an €800 million tab to plug a hole in the pension funds of University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin in order to comply with a European directive.

For some unknown reason the same treatment was not afforded other people; for example, the Irish Shipping pensioners who died in poverty or the Waterford Crystal pensioners who are living in poverty despite the same European directive. The Waterford pensioners also have a European Court of Justice decision in their favour, which is being kicked down the road by our Government.

A short while ago the taxpayers donated €1 billion to AIB that went straight in to shore up their pensions pot.
