After obtaining planning permission, constructing a photo-voltaic solar array and paying €300 to the ESB to install an import/ export meter, I am told that my surplus generation will feed into the grid, but I cannot expect a cent in return.

I did not undertake this work lightly, or in the hope of making money, but to reduce our carbon footprint and to be responsible, in a small way, for our own electricity consumption.

The weekend saw the publication of the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and our Minister for the Environment, Alan Kelly, apparently said that, “as a nation, we must do everything in our power to curb our emissions”.
