Postcode changes ignore native language

I agree with your recent letter “postal code debacle like e-voting shambles” (Letters, Oct 17).

Postcode changes ignore native language

I want to add how our voluntary Irish language organisations have tried by all means to have the position as regards Dublin rectified. D1 etc. is to be retained in the case of Dublin postcodes, rather than the BÁC (Baile Átha Cliath) commonly used by Irish speakers. Do property values in Dublin have a direct bearing on this refusal to recognise the Irish language? We are also amazed to learn Irish Water/Uisce Éireann have decided not to use any Irish on their website and not to respond to any Irish-language enquiries — see Nuacht TG4 report of Oct 16. This decision was taken “as dealing with Irish would cost too much money”.

Mór mo náire, mo chlann féin do dhíol a máthair.
