It is reassuring to hear that our chances of contracting ebola in Ireland are very small as there are no direct flights from Africa to this country.

It is curious then that this very same fact which would render asylum applications made here by Africans as invalid ‘ab initio’, on the basis that they would have had to pass through other ‘safe haven’ countries on their way here has never been enforced, as our Government is mandated to do under the ironically-titled ‘Dublin Convention’ — the EU agreement that governs reception of non-EU claimants.
