Many elderly people able to do tasks themselves

I am a 15-year-old girl and I wish to address a topic regarding the elderly population of Ireland. The elderly today are being spoonfed to the point of learned helplessness. This can be extremely disadvantageous to not only themselves but those around them.

I have noticed that we as a society believe our elderly are feeble and unable to care for themselves properly. We insist on doing even the smallest of tasks for them and, in turn, not all, but some learn to expect the help and believe that they themselves are unable to perform these tasks. This is because the idea that the elderly are ‘unable’ is forced down our throats and in turn theirs.

This means valuable years of their lives are being squandered because they are under the illusion that they are ‘too old’ or simply cannot do it. The capability of every person differs and age does take an effect, however this learned helplessness starts as young as late fifties and early sixties, which is absolutely ludicrous in some situations.
