Many elderly people able to do tasks themselves
I have noticed that we as a society believe our elderly are feeble and unable to care for themselves properly. We insist on doing even the smallest of tasks for them and, in turn, not all, but some learn to expect the help and believe that they themselves are unable to perform these tasks. This is because the idea that the elderly are ‘unable’ is forced down our throats and in turn theirs.
This means valuable years of their lives are being squandered because they are under the illusion that they are ‘too old’ or simply cannot do it. The capability of every person differs and age does take an effect, however this learned helplessness starts as young as late fifties and early sixties, which is absolutely ludicrous in some situations.
Our elderly’s confidence is being torn away and thus their ability. I understand that some cases are different and circumstances may hinder the person in some way, but I have witnessed with my own eyes, fine young men and women who simply refuse to partake in certain tasks or activities as they reply ‘I’m too old for that.’ We need to restore the older population’s belief in themselves and their capability. This can be done by encouraging them to join clubs or groups, even getting out and exercising. These clubs should exercise both mentally and physical and restore our elderly’s self belief.
