It is only a matter of a few years since more people lived in rural communities rather than in cities. That this Rubicon has been crossed has all sorts of implications and will probably mean that we will have to live in ever more compact homes and forego the pleasures of gardens and private green spaces in urban settings.

Though these restrictions may seem a remote challenge, the sooner we start to plan for them the more likely we are to be successful. We need to reconsider everything, including urban transport, utilities, food delivery and rules around tenancies and multiple-owner buildings. The scale of cultural change will be so great that early planning is not only advisable but essential.
