Enda’s inflated self-worth

Barry Walsh (Letters, January 24) laments the public discussion regarding Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s salary and uses cherry-picked comparisons to present it as acceptable, even modest.

Enda’s inflated self-worth

However, when you consider the countries he referenced (Germany, Canada and the United States), and the size of their populations and economies relative to Ireland, it’s clear that any comparison between the salaries of the respective leaders is nonsense.

What Mr Walsh chose not to mention is how Enda Kenny’s salary compares to that of the leaders of the UK, Sweden, Spain, France and the Netherlands.

Each of these countries has a population much larger than Ireland’s — and often economies to match — yet their leaders earn less than Kenny does.

Despite the carefully-chosen statistics and comparisons by some of his supporters, Enda Kenny is still overpaid, another participant in the culture of self-entitlement that riddles this country.
