Deserved honour

The announcement in London that a Presentation Brothers cleric is to receive an MBE from Queen Elizabeth is a timely reminder of the debt owed by generations of Irish citizens to the Catholic congregation founded in 1802 by Blessed Edmund Rice, who also founded the Christian Brothers.

Had it not been for their efforts in teaching the poor and the dispossessed, we might never have achieved the literacy we did.

In that noble tradition, Brother De Lellis Sullivan, 82, a Cork-born Presentation Brother, left his native home in 1954 to become a missionary.
