Sometimes less is more

It seems everyone is worried about banks leaving Ireland, because it will lessen the competition.

I think a lack of competition in banking will be good for Ireland. It was the competition between banks that caused the bubble which brought the loss of our sovereignty to the troika.

If there were less banks, 10-15 years ago, they would not have had to make such bad lending decisions to get a piece of the action. They made foolish investments, which the state, (all of us) ended up paying for.
