Don’t Labour the point

When Labour senator John Whelan, who is supporting a no vote in the Seanad referendum, was asked (Morning Ireland, Sept 11) if he was not acting against his party he replied no, Labour’s “original intention’’ was to refer the question of abolition to the Constitutional Convention.

Don’t Labour the point

I have no idea what their “original intention”, was nor does it matter. What they went before the people with was Labour’s election manifesto which states Page 5: “Labour will abolish the Seanad.” Page 45: “Labour will abolish the Seanad but make the Dáil stronger.” Page 46: ” We will be proposing to the Constitutional Convention that the Seanad be abolished.”
