Merge when it suits
Too many differences of policy and principle, they argue. Yet all, or any of those “differences” are put aside every year in Cork when they come together (with lovely Labour) to share out the lucrative office of Lord Mayor. Democracy how are you! One of the saddest aspects of Corporation history was the time the great Corkonian, Gerald Goldberg, had to join Fianna Fáil to fulfil his dream of becoming Lord Mayor. He was a hardworking independent politician but under the FF/FG and Labour pact he would never become our First Citizen unless he joined one of the ‘rival’ groups.
