Humbled Obama should consider other ‘Mandelas’

It’s reported President Barack Obama was very humbled after a visit to Robben Island Prison in South Africa where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years.

Humbled Obama should consider other ‘Mandelas’

So it is a pity the president doesn’t visit Guantanamo Bay Prison in Cuba where America has 166 men incarcerated without trial, 160 of whom are being force-fed as they are on hunger strike. At least Nelson Mandela was allowed to attend to a vegetable garden while in prison.

Mr Obama should also be aware of the hundreds of people kept in solitary confinement in the US.

For example Abdul Bant remains imprisoned at a maximum security federal prison penitentiary in Colorado where he is serving two terms of 240 years each. He has been kept in solitary confinement almost the entire time. He was jailed in 1996 for being a terrorist.

I recall during the late Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan era that Mandela was also accused of being a terrorist.

It’s certainly a funny old world.
