Obama can not be believed on Guantanamo promises
US president Barack Obama, at the time of his first presidency, said he would close Guantanamo. Four years later, in January 2013, the only thing he closed was the office he set up to close Guantanamo.
And now as the hunger strike reaches a critical juncture, we are supposed to believe his latest words.
Our politicians are no better. Minister Gilmore made a great song and dance about Ireland winning a seat on the UN Human Rights Council, but has he raised at this august body the internment without trial of the Guantanamo prisoners or indeed of Marian Price?
No, he has not.
