Charter for arts in education

While greeting the recent launch of the Arts in Education Charter as a positive development that will enhance children’s experience of arts, we feel that it is vital that it not deflect from the funding and promotion of Arts Education.

Charter for arts in education

Artists in schools unquestionably add value to children’s learning and appreciation of the arts, but do not replace the class teacher who is charged with ensuring the child experiences an authentic and deep education in all areas of the arts. The child, after all, is with the teacher for 183 days of the year at primary level. It is no surprise that so many artists credit a passionate and creative teacher with being the inspiration for their own work.

It is imperative that the central role of the teacher not be forgotten as the principal driver in the development of the child’s creative and imaginative development. The role and work of the class teacher needs to be recognised and appreciated.
