Government not compelled to legislate for X case

The Government’s decision to legislate for abortion in accordance with the X case ruling is being represented by some, including Government officials, as necessary to “give effect” to the X case ruling.

Neither the Supreme Court nor any expert group can dictate to the nation which laws it shall or shall not pass. There is absolutely nothing “inevitable” about the legalisation of abortion. We live in a republic where the people have the power to change their laws and public policies as they see fit.

The Irish people are free to overturn the X case ruling through a referendum that would affirm the dignity of mother and child alike, and protect essential medical interventions, even those that have, as an unintended effect, the death of the child. Anyone who says or implies otherwise is converting the Supreme Court, expert group, or legislators into an authority which answers only to itself.
