Mockery of proud American moment

In relation to the recent front page of your Sports supplement depicting GAA footballers raising a “flag” at Iwo Jima, as an American married to an Irish-American USMC reservist, I was highly insulted by the desecration of America’s most revered memorial to her thousands of youth, (5,000 butchered to plant that flag on Iwo Jima).

Mockery of proud American moment

They died for the freedom of millions of Irish-Americans and families who emigrated to the US for various reasons.

Probably half of those who died at Iwo Jima were of Irish extraction.

We sponsored a lad from Castlehaven, Co Cork. He joined the USMC and has just retired after 20 years.

He proudly served in Haiti, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sam Maguire would be proud of him and Sam Maguire would be insulted by this disrespectful, abhorrent portrayal of Irish-American relations. The USMC will carry on with pride and integrity.
