Your editorial (Sept 15) regarding “charities” is both timely and correct — it is a joke that this sector is unregulated, and also that no effort is made to cap what individuals attached to it take from it by way of remuneration.

It must be remembered that the proliferation of charities was egged on by the last Government, particularly Mary Harney, and that was no surprise as she championed the low tax fiscal model ideology which effectively starves the State of the necessary funds to provide safety nets and services. After all, it is a very true saying that a country with more justice requires less charity.
