Why should the elderly pay more?

I refer to Michael Clifford’s article ‘If the elderly can pay they should pay’ (Irish Examiner, Sept 15).

Why should the elderly pay more?

As a 20 year old, myself and a few colleagues at work contributed to a private pension scheme for over 40 years.

Others in the same employment had the opportunity to make similar contributions but opted out to spend their money for enjoyment.

Now, after making a sacrifice for 45 years, Mr Clifford thinks I should pay some of this money back again.

Today I have to pay for maintenance that I can no longer carry out myself. I need extra money to survive.

Why can’t he look at the exorbitant allowances and expenses paid to civil servants and government officials on a weekly basis.

There are numerous avenues he could research to find money rather than bothering the elderly.
