Door-to-door Simon collection not advisable

I read recently that Simon in Cork will be calling door to door across the city and county in the coming weeks, encouraging people to support people who are homeless by becoming monthly givers.

Simon does great work for people who have fallen on hard times and in assisting those to be rehoused and to return to a more normal and happier life. But, I think calling door to door even in the good times has its issues. We are in a steep recession and I think it isn’t fair to be calling to people’s homes to ask them to financially support a cause — no matter how worthy it is.

There is also the security issue for people, especially folk living on their own, who have to be on-guard for bogus or fake callers. Very few open their doors in a lot of city estates, when it is obvious that it is salespeople doing the rounds.
