Don’t ruin our lovely cheese, please

As a UCC dairy science graduate, working in the food industry overseas, I totally oppose the proposed ban on the advertising of cheese to children before 9pm.

Natural cheese is a healthy food and an ideal snack for children.

It is high in protein and calcium, the latter which has been linked to dental cavities prevention. Its nutritional benefits far outweigh its high fat content, as part of a balanced diet.

To target cheese in the same category as crisps and sugary drinks seems to be a misguided attempt to tackle childhood obesity. As a mother of two young children who love cheese, I believe this proposed ban sends out the wrong signal to both new mothers and young children alike.

Ireland’s cheese is famous and much-loved worldwide so don’t ruin a good thing please.
