Men abused too

I agree with Declan Keaveney (Letters, Mar 14) that there is an official and societal denial that men are also victims of domestic abuse.

This is because feminists have been allowed to dominate all discussions and analysis and the denial of the male victim suits their ideological agenda.

In the Dáil last week Minister of State Kathleen Lynch referred to domestic violence as “the elephant in the room” and discussed it in terms of women as victims.

She did acknowledge that “a small but significant proportion of men are abused domestically”.

Had she consulted the National Crime Council report she would realise that the proportion of victims who are men is not small, and that part of the reason for this misconception is that significantly fewer men than women report their abuse.
