Drink measures needed

NOW that the Irish soccer team has qualified for Euro 2012, we can look forward to great times next summer.

Drink measures needed

However, success always brings problems. Most of these problems will be relatively minor and can’t be foreseen anyway, but there is one huge problem that we can predict with certainty and that will be the gross abuse of alcohol. Alcohol abuse is already causing terrible consequences for families and individuals all over the country and these problems are certain to increase during a major event, like Euro 2012. It would be great if we could take a new approach to this issue and start planning now with a view to preventing these problems. We must try to ensure that the team’s success has nothing but positive results for the country. Introducing a minimum price for alcohol, varying the opening hours of off-licences and a media campaign featuring some of the players (and team management), which would actively encourage people to drink in moderation, are just three of the measures that should be introduced immediately. Let’s start this now and do ourselves proud next summer.
