Stay-at-home parents deserve to get a wage

WHAT planet is Terry Prone living on? Does she really believe that in these days “it’s a given that a woman can be president, or anything else she wants to be, including stay-at-home mother”? (Opinion, Nov 14).

Stay-at-home parents deserve to get a wage

Is Ms Prone so tunnel-visioned that she cannot see the hundreds of thousands of Irish women who have no choice “in these days” between working and staying at home because economics has already made the choice for them? And where finance isn’t a problem, psychological pressures, from a tiny but powerful minority of left-wing extremists, have made it nigh impossible for many women to choose mothering as a full-time career. And it is a career, a job that enables many women to reach their full potential, despite what the left-wing extremists want us to believe.

There is much talk to-day in government circles about job creation. Thousands of jobs already exist in Ireland. The Government need look no further than the stay-at-home mothers (or fathers), who are already working full-time. Pay the stay-at-home mother/father a just wage. This will secure the family economically, which will in turn help stabilise community, and the economy will slowly but surely start to grow again.
