Playing field isn’t level

I REFER to Louise Patricia Sheridan’s letter (November 4) in which she implies that the proposed gender legislation would mean that women are no longer elected on a “level playing field to everyone else”.

The playing field is not level and the proposed legislation addresses one important obstacle for women, it requests that our political parties look beyond the narrow scope of the usual male dominated recruitment pools and seek out more female candidates from our communities.

Many excellent and able women have been overlooked by political parties for too long. The legislation is an eye-opener.
