You are abolished

RYLE DWYER’S article on the Presidency (Analysis, Oct 18) reminded me of a story my late father told me many years ago.

When the post of Governor General was done away with, Dev went to Donal Ó Buachalla and said to him “You are abolished”. Ó Buachalla, who was hard of hearing, said “say that again I didn’t hear you.” Dev repeated the words “you are abolished”. Ó Buachalla replied “So are you.”
