Moving in the wrong direction for fathers

RECENTLY, Jacqueline Cotter (Letters, Sept 1), stated that “in Ireland the family is still a very dominant unit and the male is the dominant force within that unit”.

Moving in the wrong direction for fathers

When I look around me I see a totally different society.

Far from being dominant, men are increasingly marginalised and regularly removed from the family unit, for no justifiable reason, due to the misandrist family laws.

It is difficult to see how men can be dominant given the ease with which they can be removed from the family unit. Ms Cotter is, of course, right in stating that good male role models have a beneficial influence on young men.

But, her perception that Ireland is significantly better than England in this regard is wrong.

We may be lagging behind English cities in the creation of a fatherless society, but, due to State policies, especially family laws, Ireland is rapidly moving in that direction.
