IF I had a hat, I would take it off for your columnist Fergus Finlay, for his excellent article (Opinion, August 30) and how he related ruling class attitudes during the 19th century Great Hunger to some of the laissez-faire ones today.

I couldn’t disagree with a single word Mr Finlay wrote on the subject.

However, I would just like to ask Mr Finlay one straight question. Does he believe his friend and colleague Minister Joan Burton is doing enough for today’s poor by merely asking the banks to be kind to people in debt?
