Heritage to cherish - Look back to move forward

PEOPLE have been encouraged to embrace their past, to understand it and to learn from it more or less since history began.

If we ignore the past’s infinite lessons we are making life far harder and less interesting than it might otherwise be.

This week there is an opportunity to look backwards so we can move forward when Cork city’s Heritage Open Day takes place next Saturday.

There will be a spectacularly diverse range of events — corkheritageopeneday.ie — all designed to improve our understanding and appreciation of our past.

Even if uninspiring teaching nipped any interest you might have had in history in the bud then this is a wonderful opportunity to find your place in the story of Ireland.
