Treating depression - A positive suggestion

YESTERDAY’S statement from Una Butler, at the inquest into the deaths of her husband John and her daughters Zoe and Ella, was powerful and moving.

Treating depression - A positive suggestion

Its emotional force was matched by the insight she brought to the terrible situation and her suggestion, that spouses and partners be involved in the treatment of loved ones suffering from depression, cannot easily be dismissed. Last November, John, who suffered from depression, killed young Zoe and Ella and then killed himself. It was a tragedy certainly beyond comprehension, almost beyond description.

Depression is widespread in Ireland and for far too many people it remains a taboo subject rather than a health issue. Few of us would have the forbearance to overcome the illness by ourselves. Without the support and love of those closest to us we might never recover the equilibrium described as normality. Sometimes, too often, even that love is not enough.
