Cheap rates not for all

AGE ACTION believes the ESB Electric Ireland’s insistence on customers actively requesting that they be put on the new lower rates potentially excludes frail older people as well as those people with disabilities.

Many older people will simply not have the capacity because of frailty or dementia to contact the ESB Electric Ireland and request the new lower rates. The rationale behind this insistence needs to be explained.

I cannot think of a reason why someone would object to cheaper electricity.

And I echo the sentiments of Mr Dermot Jewel of the Consumer’s Association of Ireland — the new cheaper base rate should automatically be applied to all customers not in arrears.
