Nothing changes but the heads in the trough

“I’M sure Ms McClean will agree that the relief of removing the arrogance and the utter incompetence that was FF in office far outweighs any concerns about the shape of the next government,” wrote James McGrath (March 7) on your letters page.

Nothing changes but the heads in the trough

Alas, Mr McGrath, a close reading of the Programme for Government indicates that nothing will really change. At the core of the outgoing government’s policies was a set of values based on the simplistic “every man for himself” ideology. Greed was allowed to flourish, while at the other end of the socio-economic scale many struggled to get by. Every aspect of our lives was turned over to money-grabbing speculators to the extent that we saw people die waiting on healthcare as this vital service was progressively handed out to profit-seekers.

And the values that delivered this are still firmly rooted in the new programme. There is reference to “fairness” but no intention to proactively legislate for it. Evidence for this can be found in the failure to introduce a progressive tax system and to rely on universal taxes, such as water charges and a tax on the family home.
