YOUR columnist Ivan Yates (September 30) deserves every support for his advocacy of a national government at this time of the worst crisis in the history of the state.

National government is best way to face crisis

What should have been done two years ago when the crisis broke can be achieved democratically at the next general election when all responsible candidates should present themselves on the basis that, if elected, they would support the prospect of a national government for the duration of the next Dáil.

Obviously, individual candidates and political parties would need to declare at selection conventions their intention or otherwise to support the idea – thereby offering genuine choice to the electorate.
