ON his recent visit to Haiti, Minister for Overseas Development Peter Power was visibly moved by the terrible conditions that still prevail six months after the earthquake.

It is to his credit that Mr Power sought to assess for himself the enormous difficulties that lie ahead in rebuilding the country.

The minister’s visit was both an endorsement and recognition of the herculean efforts made by Irish and other aid agencies that have done outstandingly in coping with the appalling aftermath of the catastrophe.
