Tally-ho types chased by beggars on horseback

THOSE of us who were never clear as to the difference between the political parties arising from the inherited civil war structure have had the matter clarified most succinctly courtesy of the stag hunting vote.

Fine Gael are the ones who hunt to hounds, thereby confirming the stereotype.

Fianna Fáil — over whose meagre fields they cavorted — tried to stop their tally-ho, though under some forceful whipping for errant lads.

Labour and Sinn Féin clearly aspire to be political beggars on horseback themselves one day, with a Machiavellian eye to nationwide popularity.

But didn’t the new boys on the block (should that be the stable yard?) really show the way home?
