Salmon slaughter

WHILE the Government has failed the people, I consoled myself that the Green element of it might do something for some of the other creatures that inhabit this earth.

Not so if you happen to be a salmon. The department responsible for salmon fishing has just announced the reopening of a commercial fishery in a special area of conservation – Castlemaine Harbour, Co Kerry.

This is being dressed up as a “pilot project”, along with the usual guff about “scientific management plans being drawn up”. What this means is that 800 salmon will be slaughtered in the name of research, sort of like the Japanese excuse for resuming whaling.
