‘Rebound’ relationship does not justify abortion
Rhonda Donaghey’s situation seems to summarise most elective abortions. I was struck by the amount of times the words “I” or “me” were used in four paragraphs – 12 times. Her focus was totally on herself, her situation, her predicament. The pregnancy was the “unfortunate” result of a “rebound relationship” which she had to rectify. The possible humanity of the baby whose life she was ending did not enter in it.
Human life must have a discrete starting point. That point is scientifically proven to be the moment of conception – the moment at which the genetic code of the new human being has been formed. Before conception, an egg and sperm exist. After conception a human being exists, with the same rights that we all enjoy. If we deny the humanity of an embryo, we are defying scientific logic. Therefore, any person who considers the scientific evidence must be pro-life. If we deny the humanity of a pre-born child we say, by definition, that human rights vary depending on the stage of life we are at – you can see where that argument would lead. The fact is that the vast majority of abortions are for social reasons – as in Rhonda’s case.
