Bank bonuses ‘would feed 10 million children’

SO THREE Anglo Irish Bank directors were granted bonuses of €1m each, while still owing the bank €100m.

Anglo has been bailed out by the Irish taxpayer to the tune of some €20bn, in effect doubling the national debt. You contrasted this (April 1) with a carer being pursued for a sum of approximately €80,000.

This situation is not only insane but is deeply morally wrong. In contrast, I recently came across a charity called Mary’s Meals (www.marys.org), which is an international movement to set up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education.

Mary’s Meals provides daily meals in schools for more than 391,000 children in Africa, Asia, Latin America and eastern Europe.

Parents are encouraged to send children to school because they know the children will get one meal per day.

But the amazing thing is that it costs just €10 to feed one child for one year.

I did some calculations and the €100m the Anglo directors received in loans would feed 10 million children for one year and also provide them with an education to lift them out of the traps of poverty and child labour.

Mother Teresa once said if you cannot feed 100 children, then feed just one.
