Bus beats train

I LIVE in Limerick and my daughter attends NUIG.

She takes the City Link bus (Limerick/Galway return) which gives an excellent service, costs €18 return for students and typically arrives at its destination within 90 minutes.

Contrast this with the new train service which costs the same as the bus (€18 return), but takes two hours to complete its journey.

Does anybody conduct market research before deciding these fares? Surely Irish Rail should be giving some kind of price incentive to get the new service off to a decent start.
