Lost at Sea Scheme - A welcome decision

IT is good news that Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly is to appear before an Oireachtas committee to discuss the Lost at Sea Scheme.

The way the scheme was established, publicised and implemented leave many unanswered questions. That those questions point to the possibility of inappropriate political intervention means they must be resolved.

That the Ombudsman’s initial approach to a Dáil committee was unsuccessful because TDs voted along party lines is unsatisfactory too.

Last week we had a hint of a new culture in business administration and regulation. Is it too much to hope for similar changes in the Dáil?
