Trócaire backs Martin’s stance on Gaza

THURSDAY, February 25, was the first time in a year that an EU foreign minister entered the besieged Gaza strip.

By visiting Gaza, Foreign Minister Micheál Martin showed his genuine commitment to bear witness to the devastation and despair sowed by Israel in that enclave.

This is a rare act of courage by an Irish or European politician on this issue. For this Trócaire congratulates him.

We have confidence that Mr Martin will act on his commitment to a complete strategic rethink about how the EU is dealing with the Palestinian issue not only in the Gaza Strip but also in the West Bank.

Palestinians deserve a life of dignity, peace and prosperity – a life being denied to them by the ongoing Israeli occupation.

The minister has indicated he will challenge the failed peace-building policies which the EU has pursued to date.

Trócaire encourages him in this endeavour.
