Angelus broadcasts a Catholic identity

I DISAGREE with Tom Cooper (Letters, January 20) regarding retention of the Angelus on television.

Angelus broadcasts a Catholic identity

Superficially, it is entirely harmless but it is exclusively associated with the Catholic church and not with Christianity in general. If we are serious about our constitutionally expressed desire for Irish unity by consent, then purely Catholic symbolism on the national broadcaster, seven days a week, is not helpful.

While the bible encourages prayer, there is no biblical precedent for a call to prayer at a particular time each day. God is considered to be available for such contact at any time and in any place.
