Banks inquiry won’t reveal the full story

THAT was a wonderful piece of straight talking by your columnist Fergus Finlay (‘Government might as well move its entire business behind closed doors,’ January 19).

We can be sure the Government will use every means possible to obfuscate and confuse over the issue of a public banking inquiry, no doubt eventually resorting to citing every legal impediment, and so on.

There is no way the public will be allowed to see the stripped-naked relationship among banks, Fianna Fáil and developers. Alas, Joe Public doesn’t have the resources legally to challenge the excuses the Government will trot out, and more’s the pity.

But the public, who have been forced by the Government to take the financial fall for the rogues and hustlers whom it allowed to ruin our finances, no doubt with a requisite number of winks and nods when the situation called for it, has a very serious right to see justice being done. People should demand that any banking inquiry be carried out on camera, not in camera.

Have we forgotten how to march?
