‘We Club’ is riven by inequality

I AM filled with a burning rage at the misuse of “we” in our current climate of economic disaster. As the truth of Ireland’s misery has unfolded I have listened on a daily basis to those in power and those “in the know” explaining why “we” must pull together, suffer together, take cuts together and work together to bring prosperity back to our country.

‘We Club’ is riven by inequality

But on reflection, what about this “We Club”? Ministers, politicians and most members of the Dáil might be taking a small reduction in their privileged lifestyles, but somehow I think between the huge salaries, pensions, state-funded cars and travel expenses, to mention but a few, they will remain in the comfort zone of the We Club.

As for the economic experts who acknowledge that cuts are necessary to balance the books, this seems to be done through the lenses of a ledger without much thought being give to an economy for the people. And please save me from radio panels who discuss, with smugness beyond endurance, the way around the crisis.
