Perhaps the most remorselessly flogged to death excuse of those who live off the “pigface-in-trough” industry – or politics as it is commonly known – is that they were only acting within guidelines. The miserable truth is that ordinary folk have mutated to the point where we automatically internalise this rationale on behalf of our assailants.

We are not being fair to the politicians who are just playing by the rules. We aren’t extending natural justice. We are, in fact, not playing by the rules.
