Accountants reject EU taxation claim

DURING the course of the Lisbon Treaty campaign members of the public have been subjected to claim and counter-claim.

Accountants reject EU taxation claim

As president of the island’s largest professional accountancy body, Chartered Accountants Ireland, I would like to refute this argument absolutely.

The Lisbon Treaty does not alter Ireland’s right to determine our own taxation policy.

This position is further clarified by the legal guarantees secured by the Government over the summer.

The only area of taxation in which the EU is actively involved is VAT.

This position is not affected one way or the other by the Lisbon Treaty.

This poster is factually inaccurate and should be withdrawn.
