Private v public: there is no comparison

IN your editorial headlined ‘CSO figures – all in society must play their part’ (June 30), you say “the average public servant is currently being paid €50,598 per annum, whereas counterparts in the private sector are earning €40,500”.

Funny but I’ve never met any “private sector” teachers working in our public schools or any “private sector” garda patrolling our streets.

How on earth can a comparison be made between the private and public sectors unless you are comparing like with like?
